Course description

Course for over 16 s, Bexley residents only. Run by the Waste and Recycling Department of Bexley Council. Find out how to adapt your clothes and learn to love unwanted items again! This course is for people with beginner to intermediate sewing skills. Using mainly hand sewing techniques you will learn simple techniques to update your clothes, from adding a beautiful corsage, to turning a pair of jeans into a skirt! You could also create memory keep sake for example from a loved ones item of clothing. A sewing machine is normally able to be used subject to availability.

What the course will cover

By the end of the course you will have taken an item of clothing and upcycle it.

Teaching and learning activities

This is a highly hands-on course. You will be taught through demonstration, explanation and practical activities.

What you will be able to do by the end of the course (Course objectives)

1. Know simple sewing stitches. 2. Know the effects of throwing away textiles. 3. Know how to reduce textile waste 4. Know how to make a corsage. 5. Update your item of clothing.

Examination or qualification (if applicable) including costs. The course fee usually includes examination costs: registration with the exam board, certification and administration fees. If the fees are not included, the brochure will tell you this.

What you need to bring to the first class

If you have any spare buttons, ribbon or other haberdashery you may want to bring this along. If you happy to share that would be great but if not please bring it along anyway for inspiration!

Books, materials and equipment you need for the course (including additional costs, specialist stockists, etc.) Note: your tutor may recommend additional items during the course.

Any necessary material will be provided by the course tutor including needle, thread, materials, buttons etc. Materials are limited so if you have a specific project or ideas please feel free to bring along your own items.

Additional information - General

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor may ask you to complete a Student Learning Record (SLR) and agree your personal learning goals. This paperwork is a requirement of the College s Quality Improvement Programme.
