Course description

A follow on course to put into practice the skills learned on the beginners course. The course includes classroom work and several outings to try different genres of photography and projects to encourage ways of seeing and looking at your surroundings.

What you need to join the class

A digital SLR or bridge camera, a camera manual for reference, a computer with internet connection. Some experience and competence of digital cameras needed, preferably the Digital Photography Beginners course.

What the course will cover

This is an improver s course that examines all aspects of creative picture taking digital SLR or bridge cameras. It covers most areas from the history of photography to techniques in capturing successful images. It includes history, techniques, aesthetics, and practice. Various assignments to challenge and develop learner s skills and visual literacy

Teaching and learning activities

Lecture, practical, homework, hands-on. Hand outs will be provided.

What you will be able to do by the end of the course (Course objectives)

1. Interpret, negotiate, and make meaning from information presented in the form of an image. 2. Explore artist s use of light. 3. Create a symbolic self-portrait. 4. Create a still life composition. 5. Create a panel of 4 related images. 6. Identify different qualities of light and make use of them to advantage. 7. Use and create reflectors in addition to natural light. 8. Improve skills with flash (where students have external flash/strobe units). 9. Experience different genres of photography in local outings. 10. Present images in a class montage.

Examination or qualification (if applicable) including costs. The course fee usually includes examination costs: registration with the exam board, certification and administration fees. If the fees are not included, the brochure will tell you this.

Work expected outside lesson time (e.g. homework, assignments, etc.)

Homework is set on a weekly basis, with resulting images to be emailed to tutor in advance of next class. While this is voluntary, it is helpful to get the best out of the course.

What you need to bring to the first class

Camera, lens, battery, memory card, manual (if you have one), notebook and pen.

Books, materials and equipment you need for the course (including additional costs, specialist stockists, etc.) Note: your tutor may recommend additional items during the course.

Additional information - General

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete a Student Learning Record (SLR) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and SLR.
