Course description

Do you have a sewing machine but are not sure how to use it well? Learn how to select the correct tension, practise stitch lengths and widths, blind hem, sew buttonholes and zips. Bring your own machine or use one of ours.

What you need to join the class

An interest in sewing.

What the course will cover

1. Sewing machine dials, settings and how to thread. 2. How to sew simple, straight and accurate seams. 3. Seam types and handling different fabrics. 4. Sewing and creating curves. 5. How to insert zips. 6. Discover the multitude of feet attachments and how to use them.

Teaching and learning activities

Practical demonstrations, of sewing techniques, are presented to the whole group as well as one to one guidance and tuition. All sewing techniques are supported by detailed hand outs. PowerPoint's and links to online resources, which can also be accessed via our VLE.

What you will be able to do by the end of the course (Course objectives)

1. Thread sewing machine and identify correct settings. 2. Sew an accurate straight seam. 3. Sew a neat curve. 4. Demonstrate different types of seams. 5. Identify and use correct machine feet attachments. 6. Insert a zip. 7. Make a buttonhole. 8. Create hems.

Examination or qualification (if applicable) including costs. The course fee usually includes examination costs: registration with the exam board, certification and administration fees. If the fees are not included, the brochure will tell you this.

Work expected outside lesson time (e.g. homework, assignments, etc.)

A machine at home is recommended to practise your sewing skills.

What you need to bring to the first class

1. Note book, pen, pencil. 2. A selection of small pieces of fabric to practise on; search charity shops and boot fairs for cheap pieces, find a variety of fibres, weights and weaves. 3. Pins, thread, scissors. 4. Machines are provided but you are welcome to bring your own.

Books, materials and equipment you need for the course (including additional costs, specialist stockists, etc.) Note: your tutor may recommend additional items during the course.

You may want to purchase additional feet attachments for your machine when you have used them in class. Tutor will advise.

What you can do next

Additional information - General

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete a Student Learning Record (SLR) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agency. All students on courses funded by the ESFA must complete a Learning Agreement and SLR.
