Course description

Learn to play the keyboard - course covers basic music theory, chords, major and minor scales.

What you need to join the class

Bring enthusiasm! Also bring a notebook and pen/pencil. Blank sheet music would be highly recommended.

What the course will cover

The course will cover the playing of chord progressions, scales, rhythm playing (both right and left hand playing), how to read music and some use of basic music theory. By the end of the course, you should be able to play a variety of simple pop/folk repertoire and have a basic understanding of the instrument.

Teaching and learning activities

The emphasis will be very much on the practical, based mainly on playing and demonstration. Teaching will be both group and individual centred. Listening activities will be to the fore too.

What you will be able to do by the end of the course (Course objectives)

By the end of the course you will be able to: 1. Play a variety of different chords. 2. You will also be able to read chord charts and notation. 3. You will be able to play a variety of different songs in different genres as well as being able to play rhythms in different styles. 4. You will also be able to play songs with a different Right and Left hand patterns.

Examination or qualification (if applicable) including costs. The course fee usually includes examination costs: registration with the exam board, certification and administration fees. If the fees are not included, the brochure will tell you this.

Work expected outside lesson time (e.g. homework, assignments, etc.)

Students are expected to practice the tasks between classes. The objectives can only be attained through this extra work.

What you need to bring to the first class

1. Writing materials 2. Blank piano sheet music are all that is required for the course (bring enthusiasm too!).

Books, materials and equipment you need for the course (including additional costs, specialist stockists, etc.) Note: your tutor may recommend additional items during the course.

None, though the tutor may recommend some books and websites throughout the course.

Additional information - General

At the beginning of the course, you will have an induction to the College and the course. Your tutor will ask you to complete a Student Learning Record (SLR) and agree your personal learning goals. All documents are a requirement of the Funding Agencies. All students on courses funded by the SFA or the EFA must complete a Learning Agreement and SLR.
